ICE IS FOOD. WHAT’S IN YOUR ICE?

ORTHODOX ICE HAS A PEOPLE PROBLEM

People create many contamination exposure touchpoints during preparation, storage and handling of ice

This is simply because as a species we are naturally prone to transmitting microscopic pathogens from person to person through everyday physical contact, contaminated surfaces and via airborne saliva droplets. It is unsurprising then that these tiny invisible pathogens make it into the ice we ingest - ice which is typically exposed to a number of other human beings before you consume it.

Bad ice poses serious health risks to people who ingest it

Ingesting contaminated or "bad" ice can cause serious illnesses which can be fatal. We're seeing more news headlines sharing unfortunate accounts of serious incidents involving bad ice served to people by restaurants, coffee shops, hospitals, stadiums, cafes, etc. The rise in consumer awareness around this serious health risk has been accompanied by a wave of scientific studies that have alarmingly confirmed the real danger that pathogens in bad ice can pose to people.

BUSTING POPULAR ICE MYTHS.

Myth: Freezing kills any pathogens in ice.

Unfortunately, nasty things like viruses, bacteria and other pathogens can survive and even thrive on frozen ice cubes as well as on trays, utensils and equipment stored at below freezing point.

Myth: Acidic or alcoholic drinks as well as stomach acid will kill any bacteria in contaminated ice.

Adding contaminated ice to drinks with high acid or alcoholic levels does not make them safe to consume. Studies have shown that pathogens such as E. coli and Shigella have adapted to survive in extreme conditions such as in stomach acid and even when added to things like sodas and alcoholic beverages.

Myth: Ice isn't food, it's just harmless frozen water.

Ice is classified as food and needs similar levels of care as other food products to be safely consumed. Apart from the purity of the water source used, hygiene and cleanliness during preparation, storage and handling of ice is critical to prevent contamination and serious illnesses. Pathogens from ice machines that have molds or slimes on their surfaces, un-sanitized utensils (such as ice scoops, ice buckets, etc) as well as from contact with infected food handlers or other humans can easily spread to ice that is then ingested.
